Sporting Enrichment

Here at St. Mary’s, we want to ensure children get the best possible start in life. Physical Education and sport play a big part in the physical and mental wellbeing of all children. As a result, we ensure all children get two hours of PE each week, along with clubs during the school day as well as some some before and after school.

Our Intent, Implementation and Impact statement for Physical Education

St. Mary’s Catholic Primary School recognises and values the importance of Physical Education (P.E). St. Mary’s aims to develop a fun, high-quality physical education curriculum that inspires all pupils to develop physically skills and implement core values.  We aim to develop the development and confidence of staff through high quality training and support from qualified outside agencies. We also aim to succeed and excel in competitive sports and other physically demanding activities. We do this through fully adhering to the aims of the national curriculum for physical education to ensure that all children:

  • Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities, through developing fundamental movement skills in EYFS and KS1 and develop these skills further through a range of activities in KS2.
  • Are physically active for sustained periods of time on a daily and weekly basis.
  • Engage in competitive sports and activities with other schools and sports hubs to develop physical and mental health, leadership, aspirations and resilience.
  • Lead healthy, active lives It is our intention to build a curriculum that enables children to develop knowledge, skills and vocabulary in a broad range of sporting activities.
  • Are inspired and are taught by confident, inclusive and inspirational teachers that give confidence and support for all children.
  • Are developing and engaging with our schools’ core values and transferrable life skills such as leadership, resilience, compassion, respect and aspirations through a range of sport and physical activities.

Through competitions, enrichment activities and working with local hubs and sports clubs, we aim to raise the profile of PE and expose our children to sports they may never have had the opportunity to engage with. Our PE curriculum and the National Curriculum with a clear progression structure from birth to Year 6. This progression of skills has been planned in order to build on the skills needed to meet the end of Key Stage objectives in the National Curriculum.

Additionally, an imperative element of the curriculum at St. Mary’s shows a need for healthy life styles, a balanced diet, growth mind-set and the resilience to persevere. We are passionate about the need to teach children how to be young leaders, respect others and collaborate with others, as part of a team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values which are promoted throughout school.

It also gives the children an opportunity of a life-time, learning a new sport!

Curling

Preston, is the only place in the North of England where you can learn how to do Curling. The children in Key Stage 2 had 6 week of curriculum PE lessons at The Flower Bowl in Barton, developing physical skills balance, coordination and targeting skills; as well as developing aspirations and resilience taking part in this unique Olympic sport. The children really enjoyed Curling, let’s hope we have some future Olympic champions coming from our little school at Claughton.

We are very proud of our new partnership with Judo Education. Qualified judo teachers develop children’s physical skills as well as developing personal values of patience, respect, compassion and resilience. The breakfast club runs from 8:00am – 8:50am one morning a week.

75% of children in KS2 attend the breakfast club which is partially subsidised by the school to encourage and support participation.
